Meet Kaid, a little warrior whose life began with a battle for survival. Born at just 24 weeks and 6 days gestation on May 22nd, Kaid weighed only 1 lb. 10 oz. and measured a mere 12 inches long.
His mother recalls the moment he was born, a terrifying and unexpected event that no parent anticipates so early in their pregnancy. “It was a terrifying moment, one I never expected to face so early in my pregnancy,” she shares. “But our medical team worked swiftly and skillfully to bring Kaid into this world safely.”
Born at Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio, Kaid’s situation quickly became critical. His medical team recognized that he needed to be transferred to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for more specialized care.
As his mother recalls, the team at Nationwide Children’s, including Kayla and Brenna, was instrumental in stabilizing him during those first hours. “We remember watching them work, feeling both fearful and hopeful, knowing that every moment was critical,” she says.
“Their tireless efforts to keep Kaid stable gave me hope, but we all knew that he needed to get to Columbus, where he could receive more advanced care.”
Initially, the plan was to transport Kaid by ambulance. However, as his condition worsened, it became clear that time was running out. The medical team made the crucial decision to fly Kaid to Nationwide Children’s, understanding the urgency of the situation.
The Transport Team worked with precision and care, ensuring that Kaid was safely flown to the hospital, where he could receive the critical care he desperately needed.
“We will forever be grateful for their professionalism and dedication,” Kaid’s mother says. “They played such a critical role in getting him to the care he desperately needed, and for that, we will always be thankful.”
Upon arrival at Nationwide Children’s, Kaid faced numerous challenges. His tiny body had to fight every step of the way, and there were days when the future seemed uncertain.
Yet, despite all the odds, Kaid continued to fight, proving time and time again that he was a warrior. His family held on to the hope that the incredible care he received, from the very first moments in Lima to his time at Nationwide Children’s, would be enough to pull him through.
“We always held on to the fact that the incredible care he received from Nationwide, starting from his early moments in Lima, was what allowed him to keep fighting.”
After months of intensive care, the day finally came when Kaid was able to go home. In late September, Kaid officially got his “Zoo day,” a term used to mark the day when a baby is discharged from the NICU and goes home with their family.
His parents were overjoyed to bring their little miracle home, knowing how far he had come from those early, uncertain days. “Kaid — you are amazing!” his mother beams, filled with pride for her son’s incredible strength and the journey he had endured.
