On the 18th of March 2019, Gemma felt excited to go for her 20-week scan, thinking she knew what to expect as this was her second pregnancy. She already knew she was having a boy, but nothing could have prepared her for the news that would change her life forever.
During the scan, the sonographer noticed something unusual with Mabon’s heart, asking Gemma to move positions multiple times to get better images. Immediately, a sense of unease filled her, especially as she was aware that a follow-up or a referral to a specialist hospital would usually be routine.
The sonographer left to fetch the senior midwife and returned to explain that Mabon would need to be referred to a larger hospital for a detailed assessment of his heart. Hearing about possible surgery made Gemma panic, leaving the appointment devastated and full of fear for her unborn son’s survival.
The hospital confirmed Mabon’s appointment the following day, giving Gemma no time to process the complexity of what lay ahead. On March 20th, 2019, she met a cardiologist who diagnosed Mabon with congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries, a VSD, and sub-pulmonary stenosis—conditions she had never imagined encountering.
Gemma went into labor early, and Mabon Gwyn was born on the 30th of July 2019 at 2:24 pm, a moment filled with joy yet immediately shadowed by medical interventions. He was whisked to the special care baby unit with wires, monitors, and an echocardiogram, making the surreal reality of his condition undeniable.
By the next day, Mabon was transferred to a specialist hospital, enclosed in an incubator, surrounded by tubes and monitors, and examined carefully before returning home. Gemma realized she had been thrust into a new world—the cardiac world—where every detail mattered for Mabon’s survival.
Even after the all-clear to go home by early August, Mabon required weekly monitoring, and the first signs of complications emerged when his oxygen levels dropped. He was placed on airvo, deteriorating overnight, and had to be transferred to the high-dependency unit for close monitoring and care.
Weeks later, Mabon underwent his first open-heart surgery, a terrifying experience for his parents who handed over their baby to surgeons with hope but overwhelming fear. After hours of surgery, Gemma was relieved to hear that everything went well, yet she could barely recognize her son amid the wires, machines, and swelling that covered him.
Over the following days, Mabon showed small but meaningful improvements, allowing Gemma to hold him again on September 12th, a moment she cherished deeply. This period of recovery was fraught with challenges, but seeing him gradually regain strength provided hope and comfort.
In 2020, Mabon underwent his second open-heart surgery, the Glenn Procedure, which went well, and he recovered quickly enough to drink milk, move, and interact with his family. Discharge brought relief, but complications soon returned, including oxygen dependence, pleural effusion, and repeated chest drain procedures that would extend over weeks.
In 2021 and 2022, Mabon continued to face a series of medical interventions including cardiac catheter procedures, stent insertions, and monitoring for fluid accumulation. Each setback was met with resilience by his parents, who maintained hope while advocating tirelessly for his care and comfort.
On May 9th, 2023, Mabon underwent the hemi-Senning Rastelli procedure, a high-risk operation that nearly required ECMO support after cardiac arrest in theatre. Gemma’s anxiety peaked as he was intubated and monitored closely for signs of sepsis, kidney failure, and low blood pressure, each complication threatening his fragile life.
By December 14th, 2023, Mabon’s kidneys were failing, and the medical team informed the family that options were limited, including palliative care or another high-risk surgery. Gemma chose the surgery, unwilling to give up on her son, despite knowing the risk of losing him during the procedure.
On November 13th, Mabon underwent the operation to convert his circulation, facing bleeding complications but ultimately stabilizing. He had six chest drains post-surgery, and his recovery involved extubation, managing vomiting, and repeated hospital interventions to keep him alive.
Throughout this journey, Mabon faced ventilator dependence, dialysis, sepsis, critical care myopathy, and multiple setbacks, transforming him temporarily into a child who had to relearn basic movements and strength. Physio and occupational therapy became essential in restoring his independence and play, providing moments of joy amid adversity.
Despite setbacks, Gemma celebrated every small victory, from holding Mabon in her arms to seeing him sit up, drink, and play. The PICU became a place of both fear and connection, where family and staff worked together to give him the best chance at life.
Mabon’s resilience, humor, and bravery shone through even in critical moments, using gestures and smiles to communicate his needs and maintain his personality. Each challenge, no matter how severe, was met with determination, supported by an extraordinary medical team and a loving family who refused to give up.
In December 2023, Mabon’s final days involved a carefully coordinated withdrawal of life support, surrounded by family and compassionate staff. He remained playful and smiling, enjoying juice, visits from loved ones, and even his dog, until peacefully passing on December 18th, 2023.
