WASHINGTON D.C. — President Donald Trump and top Pentagon officials expressed optimism regarding the progress of ongoing joint U.S. and Israeli military operations in Iran, detailing significant damage to Iranian leadership and military infrastructure amid rising casualties on all sides.
Administration Reports on Iranian Losses
In a series of weekend interviews and social media posts, President Trump stated that the military campaign is proceeding “ahead of schedule” and is “evolving in a very positive way.”
Leadership Decapitation: The President claimed that the joint strikes have “wiped out” at least 48 senior Iranian leaders. Most notably, this includes the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Naval Destruction: Trump reported that U.S. forces have destroyed Iran’s naval headquarters and sunk nine Iranian vessels. In a post on the Truth Social platform, he sardonically noted, “Other than that, their Navy is doing very well!” and vowed to target the remainder of the fleet.
Diplomatic Overtures: Speaking to The Atlantic, Trump indicated that surviving Iranian officials have expressed a desire to negotiate and that he has agreed to talks, though he added, “They should have done it sooner… They waited too long.”
Casualties and Retaliation
The escalating conflict has resulted in significant casualties across the region.
U.S. Forces: The ongoing hostilities have claimed the lives of three American soldiers, with five others severely injured. The President has not yet publicly addressed the American casualties on camera.
Regional Toll: Officials report that at least 11 people have been killed in Israel due to retaliatory strikes. Inside Iran, the Iranian Red Crescent places the domestic death toll at 555.
Pentagon Briefing: “Laser-Focused” Objectives
As the operation entered its third day, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine provided a detailed briefing on the mission’s scope and tactical goals.
Secretary Hegseth justified the preemptive nature of the strikes, accusing Tehran of using its “stubborn and self-evident nuclear pursuit” and its history of targeting global shipping lines as a “conventional gun to our head.” He outlined the operation’s “laser-focused” objectives:
Destroying Iranian offensive missiles and missile production capabilities.
Dismantling the Iranian Navy and related security infrastructure.
Permanently denying Iran the ability to acquire nuclear weapons.
Hegseth explicitly distinguished the current campaign from past Middle Eastern conflicts. “This is not Iraq. This is not endless,” he stated, agreeing with the President’s past characterization of protracted nation-building wars as “dumb.” He emphasized that the current mission is “clear, devastating, [and] decisive.”
While Hegseth confirmed there are currently no U.S. “boots on the ground” in Iran, he declined to provide a definitive timeframe for the operation’s conclusion or rule out future tactical maneuvers. Gen. Caine noted that U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) is currently conducting extensive battle damage assessments to guide future targeting.
