“Sweetheart. This is Mommy and Daddy’s bank account. It’s private. You’re not supposed to look at it.”
Harper’s eyes went wide.
“But I’m six now. I can count to a thousand. I can do multiplication. I need to know if we’re safe. What if we run out? What if we can’t buy food? What if—”
She stopped. Her lip wobbled.
Linh pulled her into a hug.
“We’re safe, baby. Daddy and I make sure of that. We have savings. We have jobs. You don’t have to worry about money. That’s grown-up stuff.”
Harper hugged back, but her voice was muffled against Linh’s shoulder.
“I just don’t want us to be poor. My friend Mia said her mom cried when the card got declined. I don’t want you to cry.”

Harper nodded slowly.
“But… can I still check sometimes? Just to practice math?”
Linh laughed despite herself.
“How about this: every Saturday we look at the grocery budget together. You can help me plan meals and see how much things cost. Deal?”
Harper’s face lit up.
“Deal! And can we save for the LEGO Falcon? I’ll do extra chores. I’ll clean Max’s poop in the backyard. I’ll even floss without complaining.”
Linh smiled.
“We’ll make a little savings jar. You put in chore money. We’ll match it. Teamwork.”
Harper fist-bumped her mom so hard Linh’s coffee sloshed.
Then Harper looked up, dead serious.
“Mommy?”
“Yeah?”
“If we ever do run out of money… can we sell my brother’s Xbox? He never plays it.”
Linh burst out laughing.
“Let’s not start there.”
Later that day Linh texted her husband:
“Your daughter just audited our checking account at 6 years old. She’s already more financially literate than most adults I know. Send help. Or a raise.”
Dad replied:
“She gets it from you. Also… hide the iPad passcode. She’s coming for the savings account next ”
