“NO!” Harper yelled, stomping one light-up sneaker so hard the LED lights flashed SOS in pink and blue. “I WANT TO DRIVE THE CAR! I WANT TO STAY UP TILL MIDNIGHT! I WANT TO EAT ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST AND NO ONE CAN STOP ME!”
Linh tried not to laugh. “Harper, honey, you can have ice cream after—”
Harper grabbed the nearest weapon: a silicone spatula covered in batter. She waved it like a lightsaber.
“THIS IS MY SCEPTER OF POWER!” she declared. “BOW DOWN, PEASANTS!”
The toddler clapped. Linh stared.
Then Harper saw her reflection in the oven door—wild hair, chocolate smear on her cheek, spatula raised high—and something in her little brain clicked.
She launched.
She sprinted across the kitchen, vaulted onto the barstool, then onto the counter like a caffeinated mountain goat. Batter splattered. Eggs rolled. The toddler cheered like this was the best show ever.
“FREEDOM!” Harper shrieked, arms wide, standing triumphant on the granite countertop.
Linh dropped her phone. “Harper Grace Nguyen, get down right now before you break your neck!”
Harper spun toward her mom, eyes blazing with six-year-old righteous fury.
“You can’t stop me, Mom! I’m UNLEASHED!”
She jumped.
Not off the counter.
Onto the fridge.
She clung to the top like a koala, legs dangling, giggling maniacally.
Linh stood frozen, spatula still dripping batter onto her sock.
Then Harper looked down, realized how high she was, and her face changed from “evil overlord” to “oh no I’m stuck.”
“Mommy… help.”
Linh exhaled the longest breath of her life, reached up, and plucked her feral child off the fridge like she was rescuing a cat from a tree.
Harper landed in her arms, suddenly very small again.
They stared at each other.
The kitchen looked like a bakery had exploded.
The toddler clapped again.
Harper sniffled. “I just wanted to be big.”
Linh hugged her tight, messy hair and all.
“You are big,” she whispered. “You’re my big, brave, loud, wild six-year-old. But big kids still have to use their inside voices… and stay off the fridge.”
Harper buried her face in Linh’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry I crashed out.”
Linh kissed the top of her head. “I know, baby. I wasn’t prepared for this energy either. But we survived.”
Later that afternoon, after the kitchen was cleaned and Harper had napped (because crashing out is exhausting), Linh posted one blurry photo to her private family group chat: Harper asleep on the couch, spatula still clutched in her tiny fist like a trophy.
