Tyler Baltierra is sharing his truth.
Amid the conflict with the adoptive parents of his and Catelynn Lowell’s biological daughter Carly, now 16, the Teen Mom star admitted that looking back, he would’ve done things differently.
“I regret placing my kid for adoption,” Tyler told Dr. Drew Pinsky—who is mediating their relationship with Carly’s parents Brandon Davis and Teresa Davis—during the May 22 season finale of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter. “We didn’t know we were going to get financially stable. We didn’t know that we were going to have resources to work on our mental health and get better before we brought more kids into the world.”
The 33-year-old—who shares daughters Nova, 10, Vaeda, 6, and Rya, 3, with Catelynn—said that he felt they were “lied to” going into the adoption, which Brandon and Teresa decided to close in 2023.
Tyler, who married Catelynn in 2015, emphasized their gratitude for the couple providing a great life for Carly, but admitted that keeping them away after initially agreeing to an open adoption has been difficult.
“We can never say we’re not grateful to them,” the reality star, who says he and Catelynn have been blocked by the Davis family on social media, said. “Both things can be true at the same time. I can be very grateful, and I can also wish you would have been more upfront and honest about what you wanted from this adoption before you took the baby.”
He also shared during the finale that they were offered a chance to listen to a recording of Carly singing, but claimed that the gift came with some “manipulative” conditions. Following the finale, Tyler and Catelynn alleged Brandon and Teresa “refused” to let them have a copy of the song, claiming they were only allowed to listen on camera.
“You get upset that we speak about our adoption story publicly,” the couple wrote in a joint statement shared on Instagram May 22, “but simultaneously want us to share a very personal song regarding our adoption story nationally on television for the whole world.”
They also reflected on the difficulties of “navigating an open adoption as a birthparent, especially with such a constant imbalanced power dynamic.”
“Birthparents are always at the mercy of the adopters (which is understandable, since we’re the ones who relinquished our baby to them),” they continued in the caption, “but that still doesn’t make it any less hard or painful.”
They also announced that they would “not be mentioning” Carly or her parents anymore, concluding, “We’re actually relieved that this episode is airing, so that way we can all just finally move forward.”
