White Sox Add Veteran Slugger Grichuk in Desperate Outfield Shake-Up — Can He Rescue the Injury-Ravaged Roster?

Posted on May 6, 2026

ANAHEIM — The Chicago White Sox outfield is in total chaos, flipping and changing faster than ever as injuries keep hammering the squad. On Monday, just before facing the Angels, the team made a bold emergency move: placing Austin Hays on the 10-day injured list with a left calf strain and signing veteran outfielder Randal Grichuk to a one-year, $1.25 million deal.

Tanner Murray also got shifted to the 60-day IL after a brutal left shoulder dislocation and fracture from a diving catch. The pressure is mounting — and Grichuk, 34, arrives as the latest piece in this high-stakes puzzle.

“It kind of came down to the last second,” Grichuk said. “We were talking to a few other teams, but the White Sox jumped in and it felt like the perfect opportunity. It’s a young, exciting team playing good baseball right now.”

Grichuk was just designated for assignment by the Yankees after batting .194 in 16 games. This marks his eighth team in 13 MLB seasons, with 212 career home runs across stints with the Yankees, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Rockies, Angels, D-backs, and Royals.

The White Sox plan to deploy him primarily against left-handed pitchers, where he boasts a strong career .816 OPS. “Obviously with Hays going down, you need a right-handed outfielder,” manager Will Venable explained. “He was available and we feel really lucky to get him. He’s got tons of experience and has performed at a high level in this league.”

Hays had already battled a Grade 1 right hamstring strain earlier and rushed back from rehab, only to suffer this new setback. He estimates 10-14 days if things go smoothly, but admits the frustration is crushing: “Super, super frustrating. I feel like I let myself down. I feel like I let the team down.”

The outfield scramble leaves rookies and backups like Sam Antonacci learning on the fly in left field, alongside Andrew Benintendi, Tristan Peters, Jarred Kelenic, and Luisangel Acuña — who’s flashing defensive versatility despite offensive struggles.

Will Grichuk’s veteran bat and glove provide the spark the White Sox desperately need? Or will the injury wave keep derailing their hot start? Fans are watching every move in this unfolding outfield saga.
