A Lunch Out Turned Fatal: Two Young Boys Killed in D.C. Drive-By Shooting

Posted on May 4, 2026

What was supposed to be a fun, independent moment for two young friends in Washington, D.C., ended in heartbreak when Tyale Coates, 14, and Mhilo Young, 12, were shot and killed in a drive-by shooting on April 14, 2026.

The boys had walked to a local food truck in the South Shore area near Kenilworth Avenue—just steps from their homes—for a quick lunch. It was a routine afternoon outing that turned devastating around 3:25 p.m. when gunfire suddenly erupted, with witnesses reporting as many as 60 shots fired in rapid succession.

Tyale and Mhilo, who had no connection to the incident, were caught in the crossfire. Tyale was pronounced dead at the scene, while Mhilo was rushed to the hospital but sadly passed away shortly after from his injuries. The tragedy has left both families and the entire community reeling.

Tyale’s family described him as a kind-hearted, energetic boy who loved simple pleasures like fishing with his father and uncles. His mother had kept a close eye on him due to neighborhood concerns, but that day she gave him permission to go out—a small step toward independence that she never imagined would end so tragically. His aunt recalled the devastating phone call from his mother, filled with screams of grief.

Little is known publicly about Mhilo, but losing him alongside his friend has deepened the sorrow for everyone involved. The boys’ deaths highlight how quickly innocent lives can be affected by violence in everyday moments.

Authorities continue to investigate, with no arrests made so far. Community leaders are calling for greater safety measures to protect young people. For the families, the pain is immense—especially knowing Tyale was taking his first steps toward more freedom, only for it to be cut short.

Tyale Coates and Mhilo Young will be remembered as bright young boys full of potential whose lives were taken far too soon. Their families hold onto cherished memories while seeking justice and hoping for an end to the kind of senseless violence that no child should ever face. The community mourns with them, united in grief and a shared wish for safer neighborhoods where kids can simply enjoy a lunch out without fear.
