The first-round playoff series between the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets has taken some unexpected turns, largely due to injuries and a tough Game 3 setback that put the Rockets on the edge of elimination. Yet the core matchup remains the same: Houston brings size, athleticism, and a strong defense capable of challenging a Lakers team missing key scorers like Luka Dončić and relying on a limited Austin Reaves until recently.

Early in the series, the Lakers built a 3-0 lead with solid contributions from LeBron James in the post, timely shooting from role players, and a defense that slowed Houston’s offense. But beneath the surface, it wasn’t as dominant as it appeared. The Rockets fought back with two straight wins, forcing Game 6 back in Houston on Friday.
In the end, Los Angeles pulled through with a convincing 98-78 victory in Game 6 to close out the series 4-2 and advance.
James emphasized the need for balance after Game 5. “As much as we got to defend, you also got to score in this game, too. I don’t think we did that at a good rate.”
The Lakers’ offense had dipped noticeably in recent games, dropping to inefficient levels not seen consistently earlier. Houston’s coach adjusted with more switch-heavy, small-ball looks to disrupt driving lanes and limit easy opportunities.
Turnovers also hurt L.A., with 39 giveaways in Games 4 and 5, many of them live-ball mistakes that Houston converted into easy points. Shooting cooled off too, as the Lakers went cold from three-point range after a hot start.
Houston’s defenders, including Amen Thompson and Jabari Smith Jr., locked in on key shooters like Luke Kennard and Marcus Smart, forcing tougher shots and disrupting rhythm. The Rockets’ defensive intensity made it hard for the Lakers to generate clean looks.
Despite the challenges — limited practice time, Reaves working back from injury, and no immediate return for Dončić — the Lakers found answers in Game 6. Strong interior play from Deandre Ayton, clutch moments from James, and overall resilience helped them regain control and secure the series win.
The experience highlighted the toughness of the matchup, but also the Lakers’ ability to adjust and push through when it mattered most. Now they turn their focus to the next round against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
