The Philadelphia Phillies have made a bold early-season move, parting ways with manager Rob Thomson after a disappointing 9-19 start and the worst run differential in Major League Baseball.
Thomson had been a key figure in the Phillies’ resurgence, taking over midseason in 2022 and guiding the team to its first playoff appearance in 11 years and a World Series berth. He led Philadelphia back to the postseason in each of the next three seasons, posting the highest winning percentage in the franchise’s modern era.
Yet after early exits in recent postseasons and a rough beginning to 2026, the organization decided a change was needed. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski quickly turned to bench coach Don Mattingly, promoting him to interim manager through the remainder of the 2026 season.
Third-base coach Dusty Wathan steps into the bench coach role, while Triple-A Lehigh Valley manager Anthony Contreras takes over at third base.
Dombrowski has expressed continued confidence in the roster, which carries one of the highest payrolls in baseball and features a strong core of veterans. Despite the poor start — including a stretch of 15 losses in 18 games — the Phillies believe better days are ahead. Key contributors like Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper, and Brandon Marsh have performed well, though the team has struggled mightily against left-handed pitching and from several right-handed hitters.
On the mound, the starting rotation has posted a troubling 5.80 ERA so far, though the return of Zack Wheeler from injury should help. Defensive issues have also played a role, with the club ranking last in defensive runs saved.

The Atlanta Braves have raced out to a 20-9 record and hold a commanding lead in the division. The Phillies sit 10.5 games back after just one month, though the New York Mets have been equally inconsistent. Fan projections still give Philadelphia a realistic chance at a wild-card spot if they can turn things around.
With limited immediate help coming from the minor leagues, the focus remains on the current group getting back on track. The track record of stars like Harper and Trea Turner suggests improvement is possible.
