A daycare center should be a safe extension of home — a place where parents can trust their little ones will be cared for with attention and love. For Masi Sibanda, that trust was placed in Fairytales Day Nursery. On December 9, 2022, she dropped off her 14-month-old son Noah for what should have been a routine day. Instead, it became a day no parent should ever face.
According to court findings, Noah was put down for a nap in a sleeping pod not meant for that kind of use. He was wrapped tightly in blankets, placed face down, and had a blanket put over his head. When he began struggling and moving in distress, a nursery worker placed her leg across his lower back and held him down for seven minutes. After stepping away, no one checked on him for two full hours.
When staff finally looked in on him, Noah was unresponsive. Emergency services were called right away, and he was rushed to the hospital, but efforts to save him came too late. He was pronounced dead later that day.
Noah’s mother has spoken about the unimaginable pain of losing her son in a place she believed was safe. She described the guilt many parents feel when trusting others with their child’s care, along with the deep sorrow of knowing his final moments were filled with struggle and no one was there to comfort him.
A nursery worker later pleaded guilty to gross negligence manslaughter. The daycare and its owner admitted to serious safety failures. While accountability has been established through the legal process, nothing can bring Noah back or undo those critical minutes and hours.
