The Spurs are now just 15 wins away from banner number six, and the first step is locking down home court in Game 2 against the Portland Trail Blazers. San Antonio cruised to a double-digit win in Game 1, but the Blazers hung tough for most of the night. With road teams pulling off upsets elsewhere last night, nothing is guaranteed tonight. The Nuggets are in for a grind against the Timberwolves, and the winner of this series could face either squad in round two. For the Alamo City faithful, sweeping the homestand would deliver a huge rest advantage heading into the next round.
Deni Avdija turned heads for Portland on Sunday, bullying his way to the rim for 30 points and challenging Wembanyama head-on. Toumani Camara battled hard on defense early, but the Spurs eventually pulled away after a brief third-quarter scare when Portland cut the lead to one.
Both teams started Game 1 a bit cautiously before ramping up the playoff physicality. It turned into a great watch. Victor Wembanyama dropped a historic 35-point playoff debut, while Devin Vassell hit clutch shots, Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox controlled the tempo, and Luke Kornet provided key bench minutes with 10 points and strong defense. Even though it was a solid opener, you can tell this Spurs team has another gear—and fans are hoping they find it tonight.
Look for Keldon Johnson to have a strong showing in his second career playoff game. If Portland amps up the physicality, the Blazers could find themselves in foul trouble, assuming the refs call it straight. The Spurs just need to match the intensity, survive any early storm, and handle business. Do that, and the Frost Bank Center will be rocking as San Antonio takes a commanding 2-0 series lead.
