MIDDLE EAST IN SHOCK: 'Operation Epic Fury' Ignites Full-Scale Conflict as Iran's Supreme Leader is Killed

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated to unprecedented levels in modern history. On Saturday morning (Feb. 28, 2026), a massive joint military campaign by the U.S. and Israel dubbed “Operation Epic Fury” dealt a direct and devastating blow to the Iranian capital of Tehran. Most notably, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, along with dozens of high-ranking regime officials, were killed in the opening wave of airstrikes, pushing the region to the brink of an all-out war.

The Daytime Raid and the Fall of Iran’s Top Brass
Departing from conventional military tactics, this operation leveraged the element of surprise by executing a massive daytime raid. In the first 12 hours alone, the U.S. and Israel launched nearly 900 strikes from the air, land, and sea. The U.S. War Department confirmed the use of Tomahawk cruise missiles, HIMARS, standoff weapons, and drones to systematically dismantle Iran’s air defense networks and missile launch sites.

The core objective of the opening salvo was achieved when U.S. and Israeli intelligence confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei after his compound in downtown Tehran was reduced to rubble. Alongside Khamenei, approximately 40 senior regime figures were killed in what an Israeli official described as one of the “largest decapitation operations in modern warfare history.” Key casualties include:

Ali Shamkhani: Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and personal advisor to Khamenei.

Mohammad Pakpour: Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Ground Forces.

Aziz Nasirzadeh: Iranian Defense Minister, responsible for the production of ballistic missiles and biological/chemical weapons programs.

While the Iranian government immediately announced 40 days of public mourning, contrasting scenes unfolded on the streets. In areas like Besat Town in Karaj, crowds of Iranian citizens were seen publicly cheering and celebrating the fall of the regime’s leadership.

Tehran’s Retaliation: Missiles Rain on U.S. and Israeli Bases
Refusing to back down, Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes as a “gross violation of territorial integrity” and vowed a decisive and definitive response. The Iranian armed forces launched a barrage of over 300 ballistic missiles and attack drones targeting Israeli territory and numerous U.S. military installations across the Middle East.

In Israel, despite air defense systems working at maximum capacity, an Iranian missile evaded interception and made a direct impact on an apartment building in Tel Aviv. According to Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s national emergency service, the strike left one woman dead and 121 others injured (including 2 in moderate condition and 119 with mild injuries).

Simultaneously, Iran targeted U.S. military infrastructure within its missile range, including Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, and Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. Airports in the UAE and Kuwait also reported casualties and damage from falling debris following drone interceptions. The escalating threat prompted U.S. embassies across the region to issue urgent shelter-in-place orders for all personnel and citizens.

A Deeply Divided America: Who Holds the Power of War?
Monitoring the operation from a makeshift Situation Room at Mar-a-Lago—flanked by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and War Secretary Pete Hegseth—President Donald Trump framed the offensive as a “noble mission” to permanently eliminate Iran’s nuclear threat and liberate the Iranian people.

However, the unilateral military action has ignited a political firestorm back in the United States. Democrats, led by former Vice President Kamala Harris and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, accused Trump of dragging the military into an unconstitutional and reckless “regime-change war.” Harris slammed the operation as “recklessness dressed up as resolve.”

Strikingly, the pushback is not entirely partisan. Prominent Republican figures, including former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, criticized the president for abandoning the “America First” agenda. Meanwhile, GOP Sen. Rand Paul and Rep. Thomas Massie are actively working across the aisle with Democrats to force a vote on a War Powers Resolution, aiming to strip the president’s authority to conduct further military operations in Iran without explicit congressional approval.

International Reaction and Global Ramifications
The unprecedented strikes have placed Western allies in a delicate position. France, the U.K., and Germany quickly issued a joint statement distancing themselves from the operation, urging a return to diplomacy and confirming they “did not participate in these strikes.” United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the military escalation from all sides, warning of catastrophic consequences for regional stability.

Conversely, Ukraine voiced strong support for the strikes, using the moment to condemn the Iranian regime’s human rights abuses and its military alliance with Russia. In the Middle East, Arab states like Saudi Arabia and Qatar, while allowing their airspace to be used for defensive interceptions, issued statements condemning the violation of sovereign airspace and urging immediate de-escalation to avoid being caught in the crossfire.

What is the Future of Iran?
The sudden eradication of Iran’s highest echelon of leadership has created a dangerous power vacuum. Regional analysts warn that if the IRGC maintains its cohesion, the current system may simply consolidate into an even more transparently brutal military dictatorship.

Alternatively, exiled opposition figures see an opening. Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi and the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) have called for citizens and the military to defect and rise up, promoting a 10-point plan to transition the nation into a secular, democratic, and non-nuclear republic.

Will “Operation Epic Fury” truly bring about the liberation of the Iranian people as President Trump claims, or will it be the spark that burns down the entire Middle East, dragging the U.S. into another endless quagmire? For now, the answer remains buried in the bunkers of Tehran, the rubble of Tel Aviv, and military bases across the Persian Gulf.
