The baby was in an awkward position, and after several attempts to get a clear image, the sonographer suggested that Claire be referred to fetal cardiology for further checks. This was when their world began to change. Fear gripped them as they were told that they would be contacted for an appointment, but before they could leave, a cancellation opened up an immediate spot that afternoon for a cardiology scan.
The sonographer at the cardiology department was not only experienced but also trained by Tiny Tickers, and her calm demeanor helped reassure them throughout the process. She spent nearly an hour carefully scanning Claire, with a fetal cardiologist in the room to guide the process and ensure the best possible images. The waiting felt like an eternity, but eventually, the cardiologist entered the room with a cardiac specialist nurse, Sharon, who became their lifeline.
The diagnosis was devastating. Their baby had mitral stenosis and coarctation of the aorta (CoA), with a third defect that Claire, in her emotional fog, couldn’t fully absorb. Claire and Tom were left grappling with the stark reality of the situation. Their baby, who had once seemed so healthy, now faced an uncertain future. The emotional toll was unimaginable. But amidst the heartache, Claire kept reminding herself that aside from the heart defect, her pregnancy was otherwise healthy. At 37 weeks, Claire was hospitalized with pregnancy-induced hypertension.
