Once celebrated as one of snooker’s most gifted cueists, Stephen Lee’s career came crashing down after one of the sport’s most controversial corruption cases. The former world number five and five-time ranking event champion was banned for 12 years following an extensive investigation into match-fixing allegations — a decision that effectively ended his professional career.
Lee, known for his smooth cue action and tactical precision, rose through the ranks in the late 1990s and early 2000s, reaching his peak between 2002 and 2004. But in 2013, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) charged him with multiple counts of manipulating match results and frames — marking one of the darkest chapters in modern snooker history.
The WPBSA found Lee guilty of seven counts of match-fixing relating to matches played between 2008 and 2009 — including fixtures in the UK Championship, the Welsh Open, and the World Championship.
An independent tribunal determined that Lee had accepted thousands of pounds in exchange for influencing frame outcomes and providing inside information to betting syndicates.
Although the tribunal did not conclude that Lee deliberately lost entire matches he could have won, it found overwhelming evidence that he manipulated specific situations within games.
WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson described the case as “the worst and most detailed example of snooker corruption we’ve ever seen.”
On October 12, 2013, Stephen Lee was issued a 12-year suspension, backdated to 2012, meaning he would not be eligible to return until October 2024 — coincidentally, his 50th birthday.
He was also ordered to pay £40,000 in legal costs, and reports later revealed he still owed more than £125,000 related to the investigation and appeals.
Immediately after the ruling, Lee spoke to reporters outside court, visibly shaken and defiant.
“I’m absolutely devastated with what’s happened here,” he said. “It’s outrageous — eleven months of this is outrageous. The kids are getting picked on at school. It’s totally unbelievable what I’ve been put through.”
He argued that he had not been properly represented during the proceedings:
“I had no lawyer to represent me. If I’d had one, the outcome would have been completely different. A dirty picture’s been painted — and the truth will come out.”
Lee vowed to make an official statement with his legal team, claiming the case against him was based on “no facts.”
The verdict sent shockwaves through the snooker community. While some players supported the severity of the punishment, others expressed sympathy, calling it an excessive penalty for a player under financial strain.
Former professional Willie Thorne said bluntly:
“It’s effectively a life ban. He’ll be 50 when he gets his license back — and at that age, you’ve got no chance.”
Still, Lee’s talent remained undisputed. Many players, including Ronnie O’Sullivan and John Higgins, later commented that if Lee were ever allowed to return, he’d be welcomed back for his cueing genius — provided he had served his punishment in full.
After his suspension began, Lee relocated to Asia, where he worked as a coach for amateur players in China and Hong Kong. In 2018, he was briefly detained in an immigration raid in Hong Kong for working without a valid visa — another difficult chapter in his turbulent post-snooker years.
Despite the ban, he kept practicing, occasionally appearing in exhibitions across Southeast Asia. In August 2025, Lee played a friendly match in Thailand against James Wattana, defeating the former world number three 2–1 — his first public match in over a decade.
Videos of the game circulated online, with fans noting that “he still has that beautiful cue action” and “he could still compete with today’s players.”
As of 2025, the countdown to the end of Lee’s 12-year ban has begun. While he has not confirmed any plans for a professional comeback, speculation continues to swirl.
O’Sullivan himself commented earlier this year:
“I think he could compete. I’ve seen him on YouTube — he’s still a great cueist. How far he’d go, I don’t know, but he’d be eager to play.”
John Higgins added:
“If he serves his time and wants to come back, we’ll welcome him back with open arms. No problem.”
Whether Stephen Lee ever steps back into the arena remains uncertain. But his story — of brilliance, controversy, and redemption — remains one of the most compelling in the history of snooker.
