Rebecca’s journey with her son Caleb began with hope, but it quickly turned into a battle filled with uncertainty, fear, and love. At 23 weeks pregnant, Rebecca went for a routine anomaly scan, but what should have been a moment of joy turned into a life-changing experience. Rebecca and her partner were devastated by the news. They were scheduled to see a cardiologist the following week, and when the appointment came, they received the devastating confirmation. Caleb was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a severe congenital heart defect where the left side of the heart is underdeveloped, making it impossible for the heart to pump oxygen-rich blood properly. They were offered the option of termination, but Rebecca and her partner chose not to give up, knowing there was a chance Caleb could survive with surgery.
Their journey didn’t end there. Rebecca and her family were connected to Tiny Tickers and Little Hearts Matter, both organizations that provided invaluable support throughout her pregnancy. These organizations helped Rebecca stay strong and hopeful as she navigated the uncertain road ahead.
When Caleb was born, Rebecca was determined to make the most of their brief time together. Despite the fear of what was to come, she felt prepared after reading others’ stories of similar experiences. When Caleb was born, she had ten precious minutes of skin-to-skin contact before he was taken to the medical team for his first round of checks. After that, she was allowed to hold him again for five minutes before he had to be taken away for further treatment. Though it was heartbreaking to part with him, Rebecca felt comforted by the incredible support of the nurses.
Caleb’s fight had just begun. That same day, he was transferred to a children’s hospital, where doctors noticed he began to struggle. He was moved to the high dependency unit, and at just three days old, he underwent his first major surgery—the Norwood procedure, which lasted five hours. The surgery was nerve-wracking for Rebecca, but Caleb handled it with strength and resilience. A week later, Caleb needed another surgery for a valve repair, which also went smoothly.
But the road was far from easy. Caleb’s health continued to be a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Recently, he had undergone another surgery to have a stent fitted. His body had already been through so much, and to give his heart and lungs a break from all the stress, Caleb was placed on ECMO—life support. Rebecca and her family could only hope that he would recover soon and be able to come off the machine.
Over the next weeks, Caleb faced even more surgery—three more operations in total, including a diaphragm plication and two thoracic duct ligations. With each procedure, Caleb showed just how brave and strong he was. His strength gave Rebecca and her family strength, and his love filled every room he was in. Despite the many setbacks, Caleb’s courage never wavered.
But on July 14, 2025, after fighting with everything he had, Caleb gained his angel wings. His heart never failed him, but the complications from his surgeries were simply too much for his tiny body to handle. He passed away peacefully in Rebecca’s arms, surrounded by love.
Though Caleb’s time on this Earth was short, his impact was profound. He changed Rebecca’s life in ways words cannot capture. Caleb will always be remembered as their brave boy—their sunshine, their everything. Rebecca’s heart is shattered, and her arms ache with the pain of loss, but she holds onto the love and memories Caleb gave her, knowing that his spirit will always be with her.
