A tragic midair incident over western Iraq has claimed the lives of six United States Air Force airmen, marking one of the deadliest aviation losses since the start of the ongoing Middle East campaign.
According to the United States Central Command, the crash occurred on March 12, 2026, during operations connected to Operation Epic Fury. The aircraft involved was a Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker, a key aerial refueling platform that allows U.S. and allied aircraft to remain in the air for extended combat missions.
All six crew members aboard the tanker were confirmed dead.
Military officials said the aircraft went down in western Iraq after an apparent midair collision involving another aircraft. The second aircraft — also a KC-135 tanker — suffered damage to its vertical stabilizer but remained controllable and successfully diverted to land safely.
Authorities emphasized that the loss was not caused by hostile fire.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation,” CENTCOM said in an official statement. “The aircraft was operating in friendly airspace at the time of the event.”
The Department of War later released the identities of the six service members who lost their lives.

They were tanker airmen — the crews responsible for one of the most vital but often overlooked missions in modern warfare: aerial refueling.
Without them, fighter jets, bombers, reconnaissance aircraft, and cargo planes could not operate far from their bases or remain in combat zones for extended periods.
The tanker lost in the incident has been identified as a KC-135R delivered in the early 1960s. Despite its age, the Stratotanker remains a backbone of U.S. airpower.
Derived from the Boeing 707 airliner, the aircraft entered service during the Cold War and has supported virtually every major American military operation for more than six decades.
Today, hundreds of KC-135s still serve across active duty, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve units.
During missions, a refueling boom extends from the rear of the aircraft, allowing other planes to connect and receive fuel while flying at high altitude — a delicate maneuver requiring precise coordination between crews.
Though air-to-air refueling operations are routine, they involve aircraft flying extremely close together at high speed, leaving little margin for error.
The crash occurred in a remote desert region near the Jordanian border, an area frequently used by U.S. aircraft supporting operations across the Middle East.
Investigators are now reviewing flight data, communications records, and wreckage to determine what led to the fatal collision.
The loss raises the number of U.S. service members killed during the current conflict tied to Operation Epic Fury to at least 13.
As recovery operations continue, military officials say the fallen airmen will be returned to the United States for a dignified transfer ceremony.
