Carbon ion therapy represents one of the most advanced forms of radiation treatment available worldwide. Unlike traditional X‑ray and even proton therapies, carbon ion therapy uses high‑energy carbon ions to directly destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The technology has been used in select centers across Asia and Europe with promising results, especially for tumors that have historically resisted standard treatments.

According to officials, proton therapy is anticipated to start in 2027, with carbon ion therapy expected to follow in 2028 pending final regulatory approvals. First Lady Casey DeSantis — a breast cancer survivor — spoke emotionally about the promise of the new therapy. Her personal experience with traditional radiation underscored the importance of advancing treatment options: “I went through six weeks of radiation myself. The side effects were real and long lasting. This technology gives patients hope for not just survival, but a better quality of life after treatment.”

Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States, with more than 130,000 new cases reported annually in Florida alone.
