US Men’s Hockey Delivers Miracle Sequel: Jack Hughes Scores Golden Goal with Broken Teeth to Win Olympic Gold

Posted on April 25, 2026

Forty-six years after the legendary “Miracle on Ice,” Team USA has written another unforgettable chapter in Olympic hockey history.

In a thrilling gold-medal game on February 22 at Santagiulia Arena, the United States defeated archrival Canada 2-1 in overtime to claim the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The hero of the night was Jack Hughes, who scored the game-winning goal just minutes after getting two teeth knocked out.

The matchup lived up to its billing as a classic North American showdown. Canada dominated much of the play, outshooting the Americans 42-28, but stellar goaltending from Connor Hellebuyck kept the U.S. alive. Then came the dramatic turning point late in the third period: Canada’s Sam Bennett swung his stick and caught Hughes in the face, breaking two of his teeth and forcing him off the ice in pain.

Most players would have stayed in the locker room. Not Hughes. The 24-year-old star returned moments later and, at 1:41 of overtime, finished a beautiful cross-ice feed from Zach Werenski, beating the Canadian goalie for the golden goal.

A smiling Hughes, missing teeth and all, told reporters afterward: “I looked down and saw my teeth on the ice and thought, ‘Here we go again.’ I’m from the greatest country in the world — we’ve got great dentists too. So I’m pretty lucky I’m an American.”

Hughes finished the tournament with 4 goals and 3 assists in 6 games. His brother Quinn Hughes, a key defenseman, also played a major role in the run. Adding to the family legacy, their mother Ellen Hughes served as an advisor for the U.S. women’s team, which won its own gold medal against Canada just days earlier.

Head coach Mike Sullivan praised his young star: “Jack had an incredible tournament. He showed his elite skill all Olympics long, and tonight was the perfect example.”

This victory marks just the second time the U.S. has beaten Canada in an Olympic gold-medal game. The entire American bench poured onto the ice in celebration as the crowd erupted — a scene that will be remembered for years.

From broken teeth to broken records, Jack Hughes and Team USA have delivered a moment that will echo the Miracle on Ice for a new generation.
