27 Dresses 2: The Mother of the Bride

Posted on December 11, 2025

A Charming Return to the Chaotic World of Weddings

In the much-anticipated sequel, 27 Dresses 2: The Mother of the Bride, we revisit the beloved couple Jane Nichols (Katherine Heigl) and Kevin Doyle (James Marsden) nearly two decades after they first found their own happily ever after. She famously served as a bridesmaid 27 times and eventually became a bride once, but Jane is now poised to step into what promises to be her most challenging and emotionally taxing role to date: The Mother of the Bride.

The film catches up with Jane and Kevin two years shy of their twentieth wedding anniversary. They are living a vibrant, if slightly chaotic, life in the heart of New York City, successfully running a major event planning company that they built together. Their professional world is the epitome of organization and perfection—a reflection of Jane’s innate need for control. This highly structured world, however, is violently upended when their fiercely independent, Gen-Z daughter, whom they affectionately call “Nic,” drops a bombshell announcement. Nic, a free-spirited art student, has decided to marry a musician she met just three weeks prior at Coachella, and they want to elope.

The Ultimate “Mom-zilla” vs. The Barefoot Bride

Katherine Heigl masterfully returns as Jane, retaining the neurotic charm and well-meaning intensity that endeared her to audiences. But the tables have dramatically turned. Jane, the woman who once dedicated her life to ensuring the perfect execution of other people’s traditional weddings, morphs into the ultimate “Mom-zilla.” Terrified that her daughter will make a mistake and driven by a deep desire to give Nic the perfect, traditional, color-coordinated, and seated-dinner-complete wedding, Jane attempts to take complete control. Her daughter, in stark contrast, desires a zero-guest, barefoot, eco-friendly elopement, viewing a big wedding as an embarrassing relic of the past. The generational and ideological clash provides the film’s core comedic tension.

The Mediator and the Mischievous Sister

James Marsden is back and better than ever as Kevin, now a celebrated, wittier, and more cynical author known for his sharp observations on modern relationships. Kevin finds himself perpetually stuck in the middle, attempting to mediate the escalating domestic war between his highly-strung wife and his determined daughter. While publicly playing the role of the peacemaker, Kevin is secretly (and gleefully) documenting every disastrous moment and heated argument for his next potential bestseller, adding a meta-layer of humor to the family drama.

Adding fuel to the fire, Jane’s notoriously messy, yet beautiful, sister Tess (Malin Akerman) sweeps back into town. Surprisingly, Tess steps into the role of the impartial voice of reason—or at least, she makes a very convincing show of it. Her unexpected presence and sage (for her) advice further confuse Jane, who struggles to accept help or wisdom from her sibling.

A Heartfelt Exploration of Letting Go

27 Dresses 2 is a laugh-out-loud romp filled with disastrous high-fashion fittings, uncomfortable family meetings, and countless generational misunderstandings. More than just a comedy, it’s a heartfelt exploration of a parent’s ultimate challenge: letting go. Jane must learn the difficult truth that while she possesses the ability to color-code a seating chart and perfectly time a reception, she cannot, and should not, attempt to script the chaotic, imperfect beauty of true love.
