16-Year-Old Girl Charged as Adult in Fatal Stabbing of 39-Year-Old Man in St. Louis

Posted on April 28, 2026

A quiet neighborhood along Carrington Lane in St. Louis was shaken on August 17, 2025, when police responded to reports of a stabbing in the 200 block. Officers found 39-year-old Derrick Merit with serious injuries. Despite emergency efforts, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Sixteen-year-old Dakota Merit was taken into custody the same day. In April 2026, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office formally charged her with one count of second-degree murder and one count of armed criminal action. She has been certified to be tried as an adult, reflecting the seriousness of the case.

Her bond was set at $300,000 cash-only. Court records indicate she is accused of using a knife in the incident. The shared last name between the victim and the accused has led to questions about their possible relationship, though authorities have not publicly detailed the connection or what led to the confrontation.

The case has drawn attention in the St. Louis community, prompting discussions about youth violence and how such incidents can affect families and neighborhoods. Many are seeking answers about the circumstances that led to the tragedy on what had been an ordinary stretch of homes.

As the legal process moves forward, prosecutors will present evidence in court while Dakota Merit is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The case is expected to bring forward more details about the events on Carrington Lane and the factors involved.

For Derrick Merit’s family, the loss remains profound. The community continues to reflect on the incident and its broader impact, hoping for a full understanding of what happened that day.
